How the course works…
Registration
Once your registration and payment is processed, you will gain access to the online course content and complete the modules at your own pace. All coursework must be completed prior to the first clinical weekend.
COST: $5000 per person. This fee covers everything you need to get certified, including all disposables and anesthetic supplies and basic instruments required for this course. Fees for this course are not refundable due to the staffing, planning, coordination of facilities, and supplies associated. This is a continuing education certificate course, not a traditional college course, so financial aid isn’t available. Payment plans c,an be accommodated by contacting 619-734-1357. Financial aid, GI bill and student loans are not available.
IMPORTANT: Submission of your enrollment form guarantees a position in the course. Should low enrollment occur, registered participants will be notified by telephone and the course start date may be delayed. Purple Pen Seminars leases clinic space from the community college/facility for the on-campus requirements. Should unexpected issues arise beyond our control, participants will be notified. Refunds cannot be accommodated (see refund policy).
DHBC Required Hours:
Local Anesthetic Administration (a minimum of 15 didactic/preclinical hours and 15 clinical hours)
Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Sedation (4 didactic/preclinical and 4 clinical hours)
Soft Tissue Curettage (3 didactic/preclinical and 3 clinical hours)
Part 1: Online LEARNING (accessible upon Completed registration and payment)
This course covers basic, advanced, and current concepts in local anesthesia, nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia and periodontal soft tissue curettage as used in the dental setting. The didactic portion involves reading and viewing PowerPoint presentations, videos, written activities, self-assessments, and theory competency quizzes/examinations.
The modules are divided into three required areas:
Local Anesthesia- Participants will learn/review administration of injections safely and effectively, with minimal discomfort. Topics include trends for administration techniques, anesthetic reversal agents, armamentarium, physical and psychological evaluation of patients, legalities, pharmacology, neurophysiology of respective nerves and musculature, anesthetics and dosages, emergency procedures, calculations and documentation of solution and vasoconstrictors, and management of local complications.
Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Analgesia- Participants will learn/review administration of nitrous oxide-oxygen analgesia. Course topics include recommendations and contraindications for use, sedation levels and patient symptoms, set-up, use, maintenance of nitrous oxide equipment and induction techniques, documentation of correct calculations for maximum sedation levels and lung capacity for nitrous oxide-oxygen analgesia.
Soft Tissue Curettage- Participants will learn/review the STC procedure as it applies to periodontal disease after scaling procedures and administration of local anesthetics. Topics include etiology, rationale, healing and response to curettage procedures.
Part 2: Clinical experiences (two weekends must be attended)
LOCATION: Currently, this program is taking place at Taft College Dental Hygiene, Taft California.
The clinical experience is delivered in two on-campus weekends. PPS leases the college clinic. Please be aware the college has all rights of the clinic.
All participants must submit current CPR, liability insurance policy (for policy options visit www.hpso.com), and RDH license or if a recent graduate or student in the last term of a program, a letter from the program director is required.
The first weekend is partner work that will include administration of local anesthesia, nitrous oxide-oxygen analgesia, and soft tissue curettage on each other.
The second weekend requires, three patients who also receive administration of local anesthesia, nitrous oxide-oxygen analgesia, and soft tissue curettage procedures. Patients must be adults 18 years or older and willing/able to receive local anesthesia, nitrous oxide-oxygen analgesia, and soft tissue curettage. Please note: certain medical conditions, the use of marijuana and/or other drugs may disqualify potential patients from participating due to the nature of each service.
PATIENT OPTIONS:
1. Participants may bring their own 3 patients.
2. Participants may draw from our patient pool upon request.
It is the participant’s responsibility to financially compensate each patient utilized from the patient pool $100 (cash only) per clinical experience. Three experiences are required per DHBC. The total cost for 3 patients is $300 in cash.
Please note: requesting patients from our patient pool does not guarantee their commitment until confirmed between participant and patient.
If you request a patient from the pool and later decide to bring your own, you must notify the assigned patient from the pool at least 7 days prior to the on-campus weekend. Failure to provide timely notification will obligate you to compensate the requested number of patients, regardless of whether they ultimately serve as your patient. Please keep in mind that these individuals have adjusted their schedules (e.g., work, childcare, etc.) to be available, and we ask that you respect their time accordingly.
Weekend timelines may consist of Friday afternoon/evening, all day Saturday, and Sunday mornings. Specific session times are established prior to the first weekend.
CERTIFICATION AND CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS
This course includes certificates for the mandated CEs in California Dental Practice Act and Infection Control.
Participants receive 51 CEUs for the Certification/Expanded Duties course along with 2 CEUs each for California Dental Practice Act and California Infection Control. Certificates are provided at the end of the second weekend.
